This one was really awesome. I mean really, really awesome. I'm normally not a huge supporter of sausage, but this went above and beyond the call of duty. It was relatively inexpensive, too. Ugh. Beautiful.

Chicken Sausage with Peppers & Basil
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 yellow onion, minced
- 1 lb. sweet or hot Italian chicken sausage
- 1 can (28 oz) whole tomatoes, drained
- Bell pepper. The recipe suggests 1/2 each of a red, yellow and orange, but I don't like peppers, so we just did 1 whole green and I picked it out and gave it to Ian.
- 3/4 cup chopped basil
- Crushed red pepper flakes, to taste
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Hot cooked pasta (we used tri-color rotini)

Recipe
- Heat the oil in a skillet on medium heat. Add the garlic and onion, cook them until they start to get translucent.
- Cut the sausage into one-inch chunks. Put it in the skillet with the onions and cook them for about 4 minutes, until they start to brown. then put it all in the crock pot.
- Add tomatoes, peppers, basil, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Stir it up.
- Cook on high for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
- Serve over pasta with a side salad.

Cost (assuming a full spice rack)
- Makes 4 servings
- ~$6
= ~$1.50 per serving.

This one is great, because not only is it cheap, easy, filling and delicious, but it takes a pretty short amount of time to make!

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Ingredients
- 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 2 cans (14.5 oz each) diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 can (4 oz) chopped mild green chiles, drained
- 1 yellow onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3/4 cup chicken broth
- Tortilla chips
- Shredded Monterey Jack cheese
Recipe
- Put the chicken breasts - whole - in the crock pot.
- Mix tomatoes, chiles ,onion, garlic & chicken broth in a bowl.
- Pour the mixture over the chicken.
- Cover; cook on high for 3 hours.
- Take the chicken out, shred it with some forks, put it back in the crock pot.
- Mix it all back together.
- Serve; add crushed-up tortilla chips and cheese
Cost
- ~$8.50 if you don't have any of this at home - if you have the chicken and chips at home already it's only about $5!
- Makes 4-6 servings
= ~$1.42-$2.12 a serving!
This one was so good. Ian and I both just about died when we tasted it for the first time. Best of all, we got home from grocery shopping at 1 and dinner was ready an hour before our typical eating time (5 pm - we eat like elderly people). Of the 3 recipes we've tried so far, this one is hands-down my favorite!

Ian and I made these tonight, for Thanksgiving.

1 box of chocolate cake, 1 can of pumpkin, 3/4 cup water and 1 egg white. Combine, dump in a baking pan, cook for ~45 minutes at 350.
We topped them with fat free cool whip and some frozen Dole berries.

They are so good - holy shit - and only about 150 calories a pop, which is damn good for chocolate cake. You should steal this recipe and make it.

This is a message from the Patrician Broadcast System (PBS):
I will never again go to the grocery store on the day before Thanksgiving. Never, ever. I don't care if there is no food in the house, we will starve before I do that shit again.
